All adults are invited to come to the Lions Sight and Hearing Center office during open hours for free glaucoma, or hearing screening. After each screening, patients receive up-to-date information and physician referral. Businesses, organizations, non-profits or other such groups may request a team of Lions to come to their site to provide screenings.
Student / School Programs
A team is available to go into schools and screen children’s vision and hearing at no charge. (Screenings do not take the place of a doctor’s exam.)
Free Glaucoma Screening
The Lions Sight and Hearing Center’s Canon TX-10 tonometer is used for quick, painless and always FREE glaucoma screenings. Half the people suffering from glaucoma do not realize they have the disease. An eye examination is the only definitive way to tell. Because glaucoma is one of the most common causes of preventable blindness, everyone should be screened. The following are the risk factors for glaucoma:
- Severe Nearsightedness (myopia)
- Long Term use of steroids or cortisone
- Previous eye injury or glaucoma
Have your eyes tested every two years before age 45 and once a year after age 45, if you have any of the risk factors.
Used Eyeglasses, Hearing Aids and Cell Phone Recycle Program
The local Santa Barbara Lions Club Gift of Sight Program is one where used eyeglasses, hearing aids, and cellphones are collected at many locations around the community. (For complete listing of pick-up locations call 805-569-8264) Glasses are refurbished, calibrated and distributed throughout the world to such countries as Costa Rica, Panama, Kenya, Mexico, Chile, Bolivia, and the Philippines with various teams, which serve hundreds of thousands of people.
Jeepers, Creepers We’re Collecting Old Peepers
Trick or treat night is Sight Night for the Lions Sight and Hearing Center. The program is a frightfully fun service project where local Lions Club members (Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpinteria) make a special effort to collect used eyeglasses. They are also collecting used hearing aids and cell phones.
What Kinds of Glasses are needed? All colors, shapes and sizes of children’s, adult’s prescription glasses and sunglasses, as well as nonprescription sunglasses.
